The Rise of the SVOD Model and its Impact on Writers
You are invited to a panel discussion about the coming dominance of subscription video on demand platforms like Amazon and Netflix and the impact on working TV and movie writers (although the distinction between TV and movie writers is becoming even less meaningful in the SVOD era). Netflix is spending lots of money and growing even larger. Recent mergers have been explicitly based on an SVOD strategy – e.g., Disney/Fox and AT&T/Time Warner. All of this will affect how storytellers do their work in coming years, and we know our members want to learn more about how the business model is changing.
Our panelists include people who run series for SVOD services, produce those series, and analyze the business model and its impact. They are: Lilly Burns, Director of Development, Jax Media; Soo Hugh, showrunner, Pachinko (Apple); Stephen Schiff, showrunner, Untitled Star Wars Series (Disney+); and Cynthia Littleton, Business Editor, Variety.
